Hiking and Nature – Trails Between Land and Sea

The area surrounding Terra Saronia offers many opportunities to connect with nature: peaceful walks beside the lagoon, trails through lush green landscapes and hikes across the volcanic terrain of Methana.

Choose between a relaxing family walk and a more demanding adventure, discovering landscapes where mountains, sea, geology, history and mythology come together.

The Psifta Wetland is located very close to Terra Saronia and is the easiest option for a peaceful walk in nature.

The lagoon, reed beds and coastal vegetation provide a valuable refuge for many bird species. Depending on the season, you may observe waterbirds and migratory birds feeding or resting in the shallow waters.

The route is ideal for a leisurely walk and photography, particularly early in the morning or shortly before sunset. Please keep noise to a minimum to avoid disturbing the birds and other wildlife.

When the sea is calm and clear, sections of submerged archaeological remains known locally as the “Sunken City” can also be seen off Psifta Beach.

Difficulty level: Very easy
Suitable for: Families, leisurely walks, birdwatching and photography
Best time: Early morning or shortly before sunset

The Devil’s Bridge is an impressive natural rock bridge set within a lush gorge near Ancient Troezen.

The trail passes between rocks, plane trees and dense vegetation. Flowing water creates small waterfalls and natural pools, forming a landscape entirely different from the region’s coastal scenery.

The water level varies depending on the season and rainfall. During summer, the flow may be limited, while after rainfall the rocks and ground can become particularly slippery.

This visit should not be treated as a simple urban walk. Sports or hiking shoes are essential, care is required when walking over the rocks, and the gorge should be avoided during or immediately after heavy rainfall.

Difficulty level: Easy to moderate, depending on the access point
Suitable for: Nature lovers and visitors with a basic level of fitness
Caution: Slippery rocks and steep sections

The hike to Methana’s historic volcano is one of the region’s most distinctive experiences.

The trail begins near the village of Kameni Chora and passes through a pine forest and a remarkable landscape of dark volcanic rocks. As you climb, the peninsula’s geological history is gradually revealed, along with beautiful views across the Saronic Gulf.

The final section is rocky and requires extra care. This is not a level walk, so sturdy sports or hiking shoes are essential.

During the summer months, it is best to start early in the morning or late in the afternoon, carrying plenty of water and adequate sun protection.

Difficulty level: Moderate
Suitable for: Adults and older children with a good level of fitness
Equipment: Hiking shoes, water, a hat and sunscreen

The Methana Peninsula has an extensive network of old trails that once connected its villages, cultivated land, chapels, springs and remote settlements.

The routes pass through olive groves, pine forests, old stone terraces and volcanic formations. At many points, they offer unobstructed views of the sea, Poros, Aegina and the coast of the Peloponnese.

There are both short routes and hikes lasting several hours. Since trail markings and conditions may vary, it is essential to choose a specific mapped route and use an up-to-date hiking map or GPS track.

Difficulty level: Easy to challenging, depending on the route
Suitable for: Hikers wishing to explore the peninsula
Απαραίτητο: Map, GPS, water and checking the route before setting off

The area around the picturesque harbour of Vathy combines coastal scenery, volcanic geology and archaeological remains.

From the village, you can take short walks towards the surrounding hills and the Palaiokastro area, where sections of ancient fortifications still survive. The views over the small bay and the peninsula’s steep slopes are particularly beautiful.

The old trails are not consistently maintained or clearly marked throughout. For a longer hike, check the route and current trail conditions in advance.

After your walk, you can return to Vathy harbour for a meal or to relax by the sea.

Difficulty level: Easy to moderate
Suitable for: Combining walking, history and local food
Caution: Follow a mapped route and avoid crossing private land

Peristeri Cave is a remarkable geological formation on Methana and one of the region’s more adventurous destinations.

Inside the cave, there is water and a variety of rock formations, while the temperature, lighting and conditions differ considerably from those outside.

This is not an organised tourist cave. Entering and exploring it is not recommended without someone who knows the site well, appropriate lighting and the necessary equipment. Access should never be attempted alone, after rainfall or when the water conditions are unknown.

For most visitors, it is advisable to approach and observe the natural formation from a safe location rather than explore its interior independently.

Difficulty level: Challenging and adventurous
Suitable for: Experienced visitors with local guidance
Caution: Do not enter or swim inside without proper guidance and safety precautions

The Lemon Forest stretches across the hillside opposite Poros and is one of the most distinctive agricultural landscapes in the Troezen region.

Lemon, orange and other citrus trees create a lush green setting that becomes especially fragrant during the blossom season. The area is closely associated with local rural life and the region’s literary heritage.

Visitors can enjoy a leisurely walk along the public roads and accessible paths. As much of the Lemon Forest consists of cultivated and privately owned land, visitors should remain on public roads and respect private property.

Difficulty level: Easy
Suitable for: Peaceful walks and photography
Best time to visit: Spring and the citrus blossom season

Poros offers much more than beaches and picturesque alleyways. Much of the island’s interior is covered with pine forest and crossed by quiet roads and trails with beautiful views over the Saronic Gulf.

One particularly interesting area is around the Sanctuary of Poseidon, where nature meets ancient history. Other routes lead towards the Monastery of Zoodochos Pigi, the surrounding hills and the island’s western coast.

Depending on the chosen route, the experience can range from a short walk to a hike lasting several hours. Before setting out, check the distance, elevation gain and available return options.

Difficulty level: Easy to moderate
Suitable for: Walking, hiking and combining nature with sightseeing
Caution: Limited shade in certain areas and high temperatures during summer

Before every excursion, check the weather forecast, duration and difficulty of the route. Make sure you carry enough water, a hat, sunscreen, a fully charged mobile phone and footwear suitable for uneven terrain.

Avoid demanding routes during the hottest hours of summer days. On days of very high wildfire risk, access restrictions may apply in forested areas.
